The widow's faith could be measured as a handful of flour and a little oil. As a meal it wasn't much, but as faith it was immeasurable, and God was just about to prove it.
God knew how bad the economy was. His prophet, Elijah, was out of food. So he sent him to Zarephath. One would assume that God sent his prophet to a region of abundance, but instead God sent him to a lowly widow with just enough to scrape by. In the most dire of circumstances, God's prophet gave her a command that would test her faith and ask her to give up her entire food supply. Her faith to trust God and her desire to give Him all that she had, ended up becoming the one thing that guaranteed food for her and her son.
